Fantastic give me ten more of them!! Theresa unknowingly married a serial killer and after he tries to kill her, is jailed in a maximum security prison leaving her to go on the run with her 4 year old Samatha. J.T is an ex military and ex mercenary who Theresa seeks out when her husband breaks out of prison by killing two armed guards. She hires him to teach her to defend herself when her ex Jim comes for her. Between the touch her and die vibes, Theresa being a badass, and the twisty turny plot, this was an absolute banger for all 400ish pages. My literal only complaint is that I needed more like lead up to their romance/attraction. It felt kinda sudden and it was a little bit of a letdown but otherwise no notes!

And this is why I love thrillers.
This book was so gruesome and dirty and raw and scandalous and it was everything I love about this genre. It was so detailed that it felt like I was watching a raunchier version of Criminal Minds. The suspense is so good!!!
I am so happy this is a series because I could devour a hundred more books like this. The way this story was laid out was genius. Lisa Gardner wrote this in a way that kept it interesting and fresh the whole time. It kept me guessing and got my heart racing. Phenomenal!
If you love thrillers, suspense, and police procedurals, this is one to check out!

Theresa (Tess) married Jim Beckett straight out of high school. He was her first and only boyfriend, then husband, they had a daughter called Samantha, and Tess thought everything was perfect. Then she found out what he was really like: controlling, manipulative, abusive, and a killer. She helps put him away but he breaks out of prison and vows he will kill her. Tess flees to JT Dillon, a former soldier and current mercenary for help. She wants Dillon to train her so that she can defend herself but Dillon has problems of his own.

This is one of those books where you just have to know what happens. You know the premise is extremely unlikely and that the sex will get in the way of the story at times, but still you keep reading. I definitely didn't 'ship' Tess and JT - Tess has gotten out of an abusive marriage to a killer and JT is taciturn, drunk at lot of the time, and almost violent in his own way. It would have felt wrong to me to want them to be together, but you know the way the story is going to go. It is what it is.

To say this is the first book in the Quincy & Rainie series, Quincy doesn't appear in it much and Rainie isn't in it at all.
