Honestly was not expecting to like this as much as I did. This was entertaining, funny, and pretty quick in pace. It was challenging, candid, and such a varied and interesting story. I will say, there were some moments that were pretty graphic and I wish it wasn’t so, but I was thankful for the author’s blatant honesty in the rest of the book. Can’t get over:

“I put her burnt bones into my mouth and swallowed them whole”.

I liked hearing about the trail, but also feel like she was so unprepared for the trail to the point of actual danger, and she was so male obsessed throughout.

The ending is a bit abrupt - after all the times she mentions her feet, I really wanted to know if she did any permanent damage?  Just one of the questions I have rolling around in my head.

A book about adventure on the PCT, and not. This is a book about processing grief, connecting with people, and finding one’s sense of self. Cheryl Strayed masterfully weaves the narrative around her journey of healing on the pacific crest trail, from the humorous (and sometimes consequential) moments of her backpacking (in)experience, to childhood anecdotes of warmth and trauma, to her relationships with her family members and her grief over the loss of her mother. I loved this book- laughed, cried, felt everything in between. Her voice and narrative is immense, her prose is excellent and there is just enough humor to keep the pages turning. I’m shocked that anyone could take away anything from this but resilience and awe.
