As much as I liked the first book, as much did I dislike the second.
The once smart, strong female MC was relegated to literal kitchen and children duty, spending the rest of the time in bed, fainting or waiting for her guy to rescue everyone. Seriously? Why even have her as a PoV at this point.
The story revolves around shallow minded human vs human conflicts. While this is probably how it would be it's utterly boring to read about. There is so much more interesting stuff to explore than Prof. Chandler's personal vendetta against James.
Skip this one, read the summary and move on to book 3. It's not worth your time.

Disappointing. But not completely horrible. There were a number of jarring elements here. The inclusion of the book [b:Birthright: People and Nature in the Modern World|13594009|Birthright People and Nature in the Modern World|Stephen R. Kellert|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1344715082l/13594009._SY75_.jpg|19182227] as though it was important and a classic. The lack of using a real team of experts. The mishandling of James' enemy. But throughout it was at least interesting and readable. The idea of what the Solar War is from the title is misleading. And the ending feels a bit weird.

2.5 Not sure how I felt about this one. The story is forgetful and the science is almost non-existence. The idea that our entire human race's survival is dependent on one genius (apparently only one approved by the superior alien race) does not sit will with me. James' role made more sense in the previous book since he was just commanding space ship and leading science projects, but in this instalment, he was tasked with leadership roles that were far beyond his capability i.e. miliary operations.

It's a shame I have to pull the plug on this series after a very promising start. While Winter World, book one of The Long Winter series was by no means perfect, it managed to tell an amazing tale of a winter apocalypse that ended in an epic first contact climax.
In Solar War, I expected a progression from the flat character writing and dull relationships, issues I felt dragged the middle of the first book. However, the little I read of this book showed that those issues were a feature of the author's style and not bugs.
So instead of sticking with writing I am not feeling and characters with no depth...unto something better hopefully.
