The author is clearly a historian and not an archaeologist; the sections relying entirely on archaeology instead of written chronicles are dry, disconnected, and confusing, with brief recurse to bizarre theories (does the idea that the Nazca lines were landing pads for aliens really deserve space? REALLY?) to enliven an otherwise plodding narrative. The later sections on the Inca are far more engaging, but I wasn't reading the book for those! Maybe not the place to look if you want to know more about the Moche and the Chimor.
