Ugh I really wanted to like this but halfway through the book I got extremely bored. Also, the murderer ends up being exactly who you would expect it to be

Interesting fantasy/mystery. Gritty and violent. But well done.

Ivy Gamble, a PI, is invited to a magic school to investigate the murder of one of the teachers, reuniting with her estranged magical sister.

This book was on my radar for a while, but aside from the gore, I might have thought this was YA. There were a few ideas that really intrigued me—like following a magic-less person in a magical world, the complicated story of the two sisters, the iconic tropes turned on their heads. The writing was fairly simple and I went through ups and downs of engagement.

I wouldn’t say this was a bad book, and I would definitely recommend it to people who like mystery or fantasy.

I enjoyed the premise a lot, but I expected the protagonist to have a bigger, “Oh wait I AM awesome!” moment. I also would have appreciated a wider perspective at the end. It feels like the story ends when the killer is caught and the motive is uncovered, and I would have liked to hear the reactions of those many other characters who were involved in the investigation.

• Scribd audiobook • Kindle e-book

Everything I want in a book is in this novel:
• a great mystery
• a boarding school setting
• fantastic magic (a bit gruesome)
• family drama
all this AND an excellent ending.

Overall, there is one word I can use to describe this book: forgettable. The premise for it is intriguing enough, and the first couple of chapters will get you hooked, but it quickly becomes so boring that by end you just don't care enough to stay engaged. There's a lot of cringe-worthy writing throughout and it wasn't helped by an audiobook narrator that took some of it over the top. I kept going just in case something happened but was just let down. Skip it.

Magic for Liars is perfect for lovers of YA fantasy (especially magic school settings), but feel like they're too old for it. Instead of from the student's perspective we get to peek in through the eyes of a non-magic PI, and still get the fun magic school experience at the same time. Plus, the majority of the characters were effortlessly queer which was really nice!

Great for adults (think 30+) that loved Harry Potter as a kid. Based on a world much like ours but with schools of magic for those that exhibit magical abilities.
Twin sisters, one magical and one not, find themselves in the middle of a murder who done it? The tone is slightly snarky and I’m here for it! Teen romance and adult too, Magic, and murder???? Yes to it all.
