A competent but unspectacular introduction to civil engineering for a non-specialist audience. It is wide but shallow, covering many different topics, but going into little detail for any of them. For me, the highlight was in the use of illustrations, which really added to the clarity of the work as a whole. On the other side of things, the low point was how Americentric it was in places. Some parts just didn't seem relevant to me or my country at all. I also would have loved a "further reading" section to complement the wide but shallow approach. Overall, not bad, but not great either.
