I'm on a quest to read a bunch of books that are getting banned and challenged in libraries and schools. Here's the first one.

This was a nice book, of a process that seems easier in print than in person.

I'm reading with an eye for banning, and I'm shocked actually that the adult themes get getting brought up. There are some scenes of nudity that read as vulnerable, a few research moments that reference the existence of porn, and a very bold lesbian scene. However, the author is asexual, so sex isn't the focus of the book.

I probably wouldn't give this book to a middle schooler, at least not just any middle schooler, but a questioning high schooler? Without a doubt. It's transformative and mentions experiences that people have had through their teen years.

I don’t feel comfortable rating this memoir because I can see this book being an invaluable tool for young trans people and that supersedes what I thought the images, words, pacing, timeline, etc. This book was a definite eye-opener and I feel fortunate that the author was both skilled enough to convey these complicated thoughts on paper and brave enough to share eir story with the world. Thank you, Maia!

Favorite Quote

“As I pondered a pronoun change, I began to think of gender less as a scale and more as a landscape. Some people are born in the mountains, while others are born by the sea. Some people are happy to live in the place they were born, while others must make a journey to reach the climate in which they can flourish and grow.”

Positives

I really resonated with parts of this memoir and felt that my friends could resonate with some of the same parts and different parts of the author’s journey. I also liked how expressive the author’s style is without being overly complicated. Different arcs in the author’s journey blended together through time lines.

Negatives

The only thing is that I felt the ending was a bit abrupt. I kept trying to flip the page, expecting more.
