Brutally honest, this memoir scraped both me and Roxane to the bone.

Moderate: Medical content, medical trauma, medical fatphobia, domestic abuse, sexual content, misogyny, sexism, injury/injury detail, mental illness, self harm, ableism, suicidal thoughts.

As a fat queer black woman who comes from Caribbean heritage, this was the first time I felt truly seen in a book. People don’t understand what it’s like to live in a fat body and what it’s like to navigate the world physically and emotionally. The scars you carry on your skin and in your heart. Roxane Gay opens herself up to show what that’s like and I am so grateful for her words.

This was a very confusing never-ending contraction of feelings and emotions. It feels like no matter what you do, it will be other’s fault and mistakes not the author’s.

This book really opened my eyes to what many people face with fat phobia in society.  There are also other moments I could relate to and this book is great for seeing the world from a different point of view.
