2.5 stars. Sick of using magic to solve problems. Almost always contrived and unrelatable. Think high magic is mostly not for me. Otherwise ok, unremarkable

All I can say is.. wow.. WOW. Truly one of the best books ever written and I am not exaggerating. I went in blind, ! really don't have any expectations when I started reading, and it became one of my favorite books EVER.

I love the characters. They are all so complex, so unique and so interesting that you can't help but love them. The interaction between the characters was wonderful and I was especially intrigued by the complicated relationship between Taniel and Tamas. I can't wait to see how their relationship progresses and grow in the next books.

The plot was also very exciting. There are no boring moments in this book. It was action packed, even at the beginning. Political intrigue, magic, powder and guns are certainly a good combination. As for the magic system, it is very unique and intriguing. I love how it has several types of magic users and every one of them got to shine in the story.

I really can't wait to read the next one. Here's to hoping it is better, or at least as good as this one!

Overrated on goodreads.

Definitely not on par with other fantasy books rated over 4 stars. There was no clear plot line, The characters were thin, and the magic system was poor. There was no coherent story found anywhere.

The guy is clearly a good writer. It's a shame he didn't build a coherent world required in fantasy.

This book grabbed and held my attention from beginning to end. The characters and their interactions were interesting. I enjoyed learning about the magic system especially what everyone could do. I can't wait to continue to see what happens next.

This might be the weirdest book I've read in a long time... Not necessarily in a bad way but it certainly wasn't exactly brilliant either? Just bizarre!
