Probably more like a 4.5

I read this book in two days but those days were a month apart
Next time I'm also going to read the first book again before reading this one in a more condensed time frame

Ugh I’m just over here crying because the time with these characters have come to an end! :’(
I became really attached with everyone in this series and I’m sad to let them go

The story itself was beautiful and the character development for both Junu and Somin just ahh my heart

The writing was amazing and I was always so immersed.

I loved everything about this series and it’s comforting to know I can always go back to read them

Highly recommend to everyone
Makes me want to visit South Korea

I know this book says “companion to Wicked Fox” but this is for sure a sequel, do not read it unless you’ve read the first book.

Overall I really liked this addition to the Gumiho world and the inclusion of Somin and Junu’s POV! I clocked their interactions immediately in the first book so I’m so happy their love story got told in this one. Sassy sad boys are my fave archtype for love interests hehe

I enjoyed this one better than the first one! The two main characters in this one were way more fun than the original story.

I was willing to forgive the length of Wicked Fox bc although there wasn’t a lot of action there was at least some very satisfying inner turmoil, interpersonal conflicts, and gumiho folklore that kept me invested. The problem with Vicious Spirits is that it is also very long, but instead of having action or conflict to move it along, it is just pages and pages of the characters having therapy sessions with each other.

It’s become a recent trend, I think, to incorporate therapy lingo in dialogue between characters, where they’ll psychoanalyze themselves. This doesn’t really make sense once you consider that they are characters, not real people, so you can’t really pathologize their decisions. More importantly, it always sounds stilted, unnatural, and boring.

This isn’t to say the characters themselves are boring. Vicious Spirits is primarily centered on Somin and Junu, two side characters from Wicked Fox who have more than enough charm and depth to carry their own story. But sadly, this potential is spent on having them talk about their feelings like they’re in a school counselor’s office rather than having them act in ways that show their ideas, desires, and emotions.

I liked this book a lot! It's an exciting companion to WICKED FOX. It combined a lot of my favorite elements--fantasy, romance, adventure, found family, and a whole lot of teenage angst. I loved the interspersed folktale/fable-like stories.

My only complaint is that the hetero ships in this were nowhere near as compelling as the potential LGBTQ+ ships lol. Miyoung/Somin & Hyuk/Junu >>>>> the straight stuff.
