Loved this. I lost my way in the beginning and reread years later. Excellent world building. Excited to read the rest of the trilogy.

I decided to re-read this book after a few years, and I'm so glad that I did. Knowing how the story ends helps you to pick up on the clues throughout which you missed before and thought insignificant.
The premise is that evil has prevailed in the form of the Lord Ruler, a god-like entity who rules the Final Empire with oppression and inequality. The world is grey and covered in ash. Mysterious mists swirl in the night.
Enter the hero, Kelsier, who wishes to overthrow the Final Empire and the immortal Lord Ruler himself. Kelsier puts together a band of thieves, and together they plot and scheme to bring justice.
One of the things which I loved about this series was the magic system. It uses metals to give power to the user in the form of Allomancy or Feruchemy. Each system is so intricate and well thought out, and very exciting when full battles are being waged.
Anyone who is a lover of fantasy novels will love this book, and in fact the whole series.
Do not stop reading after the first book, thinking that there can't be much more to it. You think you know, but you have no idea...

Although I thought the writing was a bit weak, I really enjoyed Sanderson's imagination. He has trouble writing dialogue and falls too quickly into exposition, but I understand that this is an early book for him, and I look forward to reading more of his work.
The world-building is really what got me. He has an intricate rule system, and has obviously put a lot of thought into it. Most importantly, he seems to want to obey that system. This is the first book of the Cosmere that I have read, and I look forward to learning more.

Mistborn is a modern classic, and displays why Brandon is considered a master of his craft. This is the book that got me out of a years-long reading slump, so it's an automatic 5 for me. The magic system is clear and understandable, the characters are engaging and dynamic, and the setting is fully realized.
