Heard about this book and ordered it, full hardcover price, from my local bookstore on a whim. Then flew through this during a weekend in the mountains. My main complaint is that I wish there were about 200 more pages to this book because I wasn't ready to leave these characters. I wanted more and more, especially about the sisters. Yes, it's a book about a culture of repression of women; it's also about family, and generational changes, and maintaining a culture in a new country, and wanting the best for your family and shifting norms about what that means, hiding behind social expectations, shame, pride. The writing is fresh, quick, and fantastic. This is a debut book and I can't wait to see what else Rum has in store.

Difficult for me to rate and review. Hard read… life just seems really not good for all involved… sons, daughters, parents, grandparents…. Read in an effort to better understand Palestinian culture. I will try to read something with more Palestinian joy perhaps, though I understand this is a part of it all.

Very sad, but very good. I really liked the attention to detail with how different people interpret the same events.
