A biography of Jane Austen- one that is not dry to read, full of information and interpretations (with explanations of how the author came to those conclusions).....a pleasure to read and confirmation that Austen was an amazing author and sassy woman. I would have loved to have known her. Correspondence destroyed because her sister was worried family would not enjoy reading her commentaries about them....many beaux, and many different reasons she avoided marriage. Forced to move and live on a very limited budget because she was a woman without any income (until her books started to be published). Southampton, Hampshire, Bath, Chawton....
Read if you are a fan of Ms. Austen...

I knew fairly little about Jane Austen herself despite having read all six of her finished novels and having studied her in school in at least 5 different classes. My appreciation for her books really grew over the years from mild distaste in high school to absolute love in graduate school. She is firmly between my two favorite periods of literature and I enjoyed a lot of the context of her time period that was put into this book. It wasn't just a regurgitation of Jane Austen's life, it included excerpts from letters and literature that had no association with her at all that served to set the scene. Of course I cried at the end.

To all Jane Austen lovers, I recommend this book about her life and the homes she inhabited.
It was not only a biography of Austen’s life and the struggles she faced being a single woman in her time, but about the strong female friendships she had in her life.
But the reason I think any, who have enjoyed (and keep enjoying) Austen’s novels, needs to read this book is that it so wonderfully plucks out places and experiences from Austen’s life that can be seen in her novels. It gave her books more context, and I love that her life is immortalized in her novels for everyone to enjoy.
