I'm just going to say that I was not sure about this comic book. I'm not real interested in cars but I do like comics. This was insanely adorable. I didn't think my 2 year old would enjoy a comic book but I read it to him anyways. HE LOVED IT. Mostly Lupe and I don't think it was just the voice I used for her. This is really a comic book for all children. I could see a 10 year old enjoying it. I know I did. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series. 5/5

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Three car-loving friends update a car, go on a space adventure, and enter a contest!
The plot is thin, but the characters are fun, and the illustrations (Raul the Third) are freaking amazing.
He used ballpoint pens on brown paper, and talks in the notes afterward that he did this to recall the excitement he felt as a kid when he drew. It's really really beautiful work.
I'm curious if the second volume contains more plot, but probably won't revisit. However, I'll definitely give this to kids who veer toward art!

The artwork deserves 5 stars... the writing, on the other hand, was flat and uninteresting.

Okay that was fun!

Story: I visited one of my schools yesterday and had my library services spiel for a huge class of almost 40 6th graders. When the school librarian remarked that Camper and Raul were coming to our library for Hispanic Heritage Month, she also brought up this book because they created it. The kids were snarky as 6th grades can be, and immediately called it all racist (the phrasing of "Hispanic" Heritage Month, and the title "Lowriders in Space"). I knew it was just snark, so I went home and read the book myself.

It celebrates lowrider culture and gives credit to the Mexican Americans who created that culture. I actually hope schools will assign this book to read in Spanish 1 classes, because it also introduces a lot of Spanish phrases and colloquialisms in a fun way.

Plus, Vol. 2 in the series was awarded "The Pura Belpré Award, "a recognition presented to a Latino or Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth."

So I will be more than happy to report to the next class I go to at the same school tomorrow that the remarks from the 6th graders made me investigate how culturally sensitive this series really is: and its literally award winning for its cultural representation. So, I'm happy to learn all that and put the minds at ease of those who may be worried, at first glance, that the book may not represent Latinx culture well.

Plus... SPACE CAR! What's not to like?!

I saw this (and it’s sequel) on display at my local library, so I picked them up. I wasn’t too impressed with the first volume. There’s little-to-no plot: a Hispanic fox (dog?), mosquito, and squid use rocket ship parts to restore a lowrider. They fly into space and the car is “decorated” by the cosmos. This is a Spanish primer more than anything.

Cool art work though.

I enjoyed this funny and slightly wacky car themed graphic novel. It manages to share the glories of the lowriders for those familiar with the concept as well as readers who don't have that as part of their experience. There are explanations for the Spanish words and phrases that crop up throughout the text. There is also a bit about the history of lowriders at the end of the book.
