I don't really understand the high ratings for this. Jasen isn't particularly likable and the king is very...blah, in that way that perfect characters are. Also, I don't feel any chemistry between the two. The king apparently falls in love with Jasen at first sight and Jasen seems more like he just wants to win the competition to marry the king.

This book in one sentence: Jasen, an impoverished and uneducated Lord, is sent to Court to find a rich husband to settle his father's debts, and ends up befriending a dragon as well as catching the eye of the King, to everyone's shock.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Steaminess: 🌶️🌶️
Would I recommend: Yes. This is a sweet MM fairytale romance. This book was like the cross between The Selection and The Tournament of Losers. The world building was good, I loved that was a traditional medieval setting, where homosexuality and bisexuality are widely accepted, but in a realistic way (no mpreg). The characters are endearing, although the prose is a little clunky at times.
Tropes: star-crossed lovers, HEA, cinderella story

I loved this when it was a short story and I loved it more as a novel. Very low steam but funny and sweet. I loved Jasen and his friends. Rilvor was still a bit mysterious but I saw enough to know he was a good man and king.
