This was a highly anticipated indie release for me, but sadly it fell flat.

I've read and adored a few of Trisha Wolfe's works but I was not a fan of the writing here. Both characters are pretentious as hell and convinced that they're the masters of their respective crafts, and it was so tedious to read. There's only so much self-aggrandising, self-congratulatory word vomit I can read before I want to throw the book across the room.

(Also, given this book's publication was pushed back so far, I was astounded to see so many typos and errors in the Kindle book.....)

I liked the concept of the female protagonist working as revenge-for-hire, but I wish we'd got to see more of this! I also wish that Trisha Wolfe had gone harder on the Alice in Wonderland motif and leaned into it as an over-the-top dark romance. The science angle had potential but something about its execution was lacking - perhaps if the book had been longer it would have been handled with more finesse.

And as for the romance? I'm conscious that this is a duology so I don't want to totally write it off, but when they finally got together it wasn't terribly steamy and was over super quickly. This felt like literary edging. ;___;

So yeah, 3 stars. I'm definitely picking up the second instalment but I'm keeping my expectations low. It's no [b:Born, Darkly|32758410|Born, Darkly (Darkly, Madly Duet, #1)|Trisha Wolfe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1489062610l/32758410._SY75_.jpg|53349037], that's for sure.

This was not what I was expecting. In typical fashion, this was a mind game of epic proportions. However, I struggled to connect with the characters the way I wanted to. However, I was invested in the outcome. By the end, I was even more so.

Dark, twisted,and so compelling you won’t stop until you’re finished!!

Trisha Wolfe is so masterful at creating dark, twisted stories that make you gasp...yet think and question everything!! These characters, Alex and Blakely, will make you question many things.. which one of them is sane, or maybe both ate not. This twisty tale will keep you on your toes and keep you guessing!!

I read this in one sitting, as I do most books by this author, and I recommend this book highly!!

It was ok, the writing is good in terms of fluency and prose but it just didn't hold my interest. I wasn't drawn in by either character and I could step away from the book far too easily. I was reading on KU so didn't feel compelled to finish it.

I've been waiting on this book for a minute and let me say this much it was so worth the wait. This arthur can mess with your mind seven ways to sunday all while laughing and smiling like the cat who got the cream it's probably why I love her book's so much.
This is one psychological thrill ride that makes you think just when you have it figured out she's throws a twist up in there and you realize nope you didn't and now you have to wait for the next book to find out what's going to happen. I need the 2nd book stat.

It was okay. It didn't get interesting until the last 10% of the book, and the beginning just felt like a too-long setup for the actual plot.
