Graphic: Racial slurs, Death, and Rape

Long, beautiful tale exposing life before the earthquake when religious hypocrites and monarchy dominated life.

I can’t say I wasn’t expecting this book to be good. Between my dad’s fangirling with Saramago’s beautiful writing, and the many good reviews I’d seen about this book, I knew what I was in for.
However, I hate reading a book that I was told to read. I hate having a deadline, because that makes it feel too much like school work, which, in my opinion, defeats the purpose of reading for pleasure. Hadn’t these been the circumstances, I probably would have enjoyed the book even more, but perhaps that was my fault; the book had been seating on my dad’s shelf since before I was even born, so maybe I should have picked it up sooner.
Nevertheless, it was an amazing read, funny and touching - the ending had me sobbing - and I can finally say I’ve read a book written by José Saramago, and, not surprisingly, I want to read more :)
