Two short, fascinating stories but wasn't attracted to the drawing at all. I can appreciate and see the skill used though.

The art was stunning. The voice and craft of the writing were flawless. But both of these stories seemed to "easy" to me, narratively speaking. I was ready for something more interesting than "the devil" and a reliance on implied rape.

Trigger Warning: This book contains sexual assault.
These tales fractured my opinion on this book in two - one loved, one loathed. I should break this down into 2.5 stars for each one, but I'm so disgusted with the second tale, that I cannot, in good conscience, give this book more than one star.
The first story is interesting, engaging, slightly selfish in the end. Wonderfully told and the illustrations were good, well matched to the tale.
The second tale? I'm bitterly disappointed in Gaiman for even writing it. What was the purpose - to write about a gang rape fantasy? So many questions left unanswered and for no real reason. What good were the girl's spirit animals if they allowed her to be assaulted FIRST and then exact some stupid revenge, rather than coming to her rescue BEFOREHAND?! Why let the men off so easily? Just another awful tale with the "assaulted woman" trope, but in THIS awful tale, she doesn't even get to participate in the men's punishment - she just gets to be abused and left to live with the memory of her ordeal, told dispassionately by a third-party over drinks at the club.
I am saddened that this tale exists in the world, and all the more so because it was written by an author that I, until reading this, highly regarded.

The first story was fascinating and disturbing, while the second was mainly just disturbing. I feel like they were both meant to be part of a much larger anthology given how little they have in common besides their relationship to the title, and the disconnect between the two and the overabundance of unanswered questions leaves me a bit disappointed.
