This is a strong, mature book. That final sentence is power.

I'm very angry and I'm very sad. I'm angry I didn't see this coming. I'm sad because this book hurt. I'm really sick and tired of reading about black trauma. Quick personal rant: I don't have an issue with the author writing this story; I'm just sick of publishers of acquiring the same thing. Almost 5 years after this book is published and it's still rare to find black boy/girl joy books :(
No one talk to me for the next year. Goodbye.

I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I finished it in about 5 hours! The story was detailed and pulled you in from the very beginning. The vudu interwoven in the story is what really intrigued me to read this, but the immigrant story it was finally made me borrow it from my library. The author gave details about the vudu religion, but made it so people who do not practice it would be able to understand what was happening.
Fabiola tries so hard to adjust to being in America and goes through a lot in her journey. This story gives you an inside view of what it must be like for those who come to America and attempt to make it their home. The ending of this book absolutely killed me and broke my damn heart. I want to know what happens after with Fabiola and her family - I just want more!

I didn't love the writing itself, but the story was great.
