A reading list that includes all Booker Prize winning books since 1969. The Booker Prize is awarded each year to “the best sustained work of fiction written in English and published in the UK and Ireland”, as selected by a panel of five judges. To qualify, a book must be published between October 1st of the previous year and September 30th of the current year.

Initially, the prize was awarded retrospectively and only to authors in the Commonwealth, Ireland, and South Africa. In 1971, it began restricting submissions to books published in the past year only and in 2014, eligibility was extended to include any novel published in English (including translations previously published in the author’s native language.)

Fun fact: the Booker Prize requires all judges to read every single book submitted before selecting 12-13 novels for the longlist. This gave the judges seven months to read 169 novels in 2022 and 163 in 2023.
