New York Times' The 100 Best Books of the 21st Century
Hosted by tangentfox
19 participants, 100 books
You can start and finish this challenge whenever you like!
(Updated 2024-10-14: Linking to other challenges, fixing description.)
Despite the problematic nature of the list, it still has value and people will certainly want to read everything on it. I have added a few books notably missing from the list as "bonus books" (based primarily on Jack Edwards' video about this list, though I am adding more), but that doesn't even scratch the surface of what was ignored in the creation of this list.
Alternate lists I know of (of which I intend to make as their own "challenges" if someone else has not already done so or I think I have something unique to add):

I have added a few books notably missing from the list as "bonus books" (based primarily on Jack Edwards' video about this list, though I am adding more), but that doesn't even scratch the surface of what was ignored in the creation of this list.
Alternate lists I know of (of which I intend to make as their own "challenges" if someone else has not already done so or I think I have something unique to add):
- What the New York Times Missed: 71 More of the Best Books of the 21st Century (Literary Hub) (Challenge: LitHub’s What the NY Times Missed: More Best Books of the 21st Century by eeb123; note that despite the headline, there are only 69 books on this list)
- Not the NYT list: 100 fine books from around the world (and not just the USA) of the 21st century (scroll.in)
- A Premature Attempt at the 21st Century Canon (The Vulture)
- The Reader Top 100 (New York Times, contains many of the same books as this challenge) (Challenge: New York Times Readers' 100 Best Books of the 21st Century by coronata)
(The original list is freely available on the Internet Archive and Wikipedia. New York Times put it behind a paywall.)
I've also made a public tag with the books in this list.
(When I first made this, I couldn't find anyone else having made the same list, but after searching for it again, it seems it's been made several times. I am comparing what's been included as bonus books in others' versions of this challenge and updating it to be the best version I can make! I am also be adding more notes to these books, and bonus books, as well as updating this description in regards to other challenges and book lists.)
