The Gulag Archipelago [Volume 1]: An Experiment in Literary Investigation by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
2.0
I should have gone with the abridged version. This is undoubtedly an important memorialization of a dark history that should not be allowed to fade away, but it comes in the form of a tedious, rambling brain-dump sorely in need of a good editor. The author relies too much on a shared cultural/historical context when referencing hundreds of barely historical figures by name. I put the book down after Part One and returning it to my want-to-read list for a later attempt is probably just wishful thinking so I'll just mark it as "read--on hold".
