The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry

4.0

This is a fairly well paced thriller/suspense novel that kept me interested to know more the entire time.

This is a story of a couple who take in an abused & neglected little girl, Janie. Only there is more to the story... there always is. Janie is mean to Hannah and manipulates Christopher at every turn. Personally, if I were Hannah, I would have run far from it all in the first 1/3rd of the book.

The author does wonderfully at illustrating the highs and lows of different mental states within the different characters.

The way this story unfolds is intriguing, although it was a tiny bit predictable to me. I almost felt like it was a book I'd read or a movie I'd watched before, but I know I've never picked up this book. Regardless, I just kept wanting to know more to see if my predictions were right and how the story would truly unfold. While they were close, I only guessed one thing that was revealed toward the end as an accurate guess.

The ending fell flat for me, it just... ended? I am intrigued to see what happens in the novella that comes after when that little girl is all grown up, so I'm starting that right away.
