The Temptation of Magic by Megan Scott
2.5
This had a really strong start and then became all the reasons I don't tend to get along with the romantasy genre.
📖 Nicole is close to uncovering a secret message hidden in a supernatural art collection—a message from her mother about how to destroy the Wake for good. But when the collector is murdered and a key painting stolen, the Wake sends their best Empyreal assassin to track down the dangerous creature on the loose.
Kyan McCarter is handsome, perceptive, and the last person Nicole wants to work with to find the stolen painting. Their search sparks a powerful connection between them, but if Kyan finds out that Nicole is a rogue Empyreal, he’ll have no choice but to hunt her next.

Even though I didn't like this book I oddly had an enjoyable experience but for this wrong reasons. The second my friend pointed out this was twilight fanfic I was a goner. This book was hilarious I couldn't stop seeing the comparisons. This is so twilight coded it had me weak. But the authors intention was clearly not to make me laugh.
I started out enjoying this because of the magic system. The way art history was interwoven with the magic was fantastic. Not only was it unique and fresh but real paintings were used and as a artist and someone who loves art it instantly had my attention. I want this magic system in a different book.
So what didn't work for me. Well... Everything else. The characters don't make sense to me, they are so inconsistent to what the narration is telling me. For example Kyan is a few 100 years old he's the best hunter the wake have and yet a complete dumbass that couldn't figure anything out. I just feel like the characters were made dumb in order to force a romance but the story kept trying to convince me they weren't stupid.
As for the romance. No!! There is zero chemistry they're just horny and it uses a trope I don't personally like instead of developing a meaningful relationship.
The plot started out fairly strong but by the end it was reading goofy to me. I'm sure this book has it's audience but I am not it.
