On the Steel Breeze by Alastair Reynolds

5.0

This is a very good sequel to Blue Remembered Earth. It's exciting to watch Reynolds's writing progress - where the characters in his early books were very two dimensional and showed little growth, these characters are believable and grow through the book.

Spoiler
For people who have read the Rama trilogy (starting with Rama II), many elements of this book will seem familiar. Giant ships with mysteries, squabbling politics, a decent into facism and paranoia, alien intelligence with human ambassadors, etc. Where Garden of Rama and Rama Revealed falter in plot and writing, though, Reynolds succeeds wonderfully.
