Izombie Vol. 1: Dead to the World by Chris Roberson

3.0

Our shero is Gwen, Girl Zombie: gravedigger by day, brain-eater/painter by night. There's a little bit of mystery, some romantic tension, and an unsettling vampire "reservation" that reminded me of university sorority cliches. I wasn't crazy about the art, but I liked the story enough to get past it. This volume includes enough character introductions and back story to fuel future volumes, and I'm interested enough to read those future volumes. The story includes most of the basic "monsters" - wereterrier, ghost, vampires, zombies - but they have picnics, get coffee at Dixie's diner and create paintings in between changing shapes, eating brains and ruminating on the condition of their souls. It's charming. It's set in Eugene, OR but there is a conspicuous lack of hippies? Gwen is kind of foxy. She's a little clueless, but since she's barely holding onto the memories of her human life, you can go easy on her.

I picked this up based on Raina's review of it. She sums it pretty well.
