I really wanted to like this book more. Gotta love Black girl magic, poison, and sentient plants, but the twists and turns of the plot were often very obvious way ahead of time (and I'm no Sherlock Holmes). It took so long for the main character to figure out what was going on even with endless hints and clear clues and after she started to, I was surprised that she was still shocked at figuring out what was up to what piece by piece.
The magic itself was fun and I loved the moms and mythology in the book, but I wanted the heroine to be a lot less dense about her own life.
