Tokyo Ueno Station, by Yu Miri

emotional mysterious reflective sad slow-paced

5.0

I was doing nothing wrong. The only thing I was guilty of was being unable to adjust. I could adapt to any kind of work; it was life itself I could not adjust to.

All the 5 stars go to rich history and helpful explanations, which help to visualize the situation, the backround of working immigrants and daily life of Ueno Park throughout the years.

The book is set in the present with flashbacks to past, and when i say "in present", it recreates the autmosphere of a busy popular place, where Ueno Zoo, Sōgakudō Concert Hall, Ueno Daibutsu - a 1640s statue of Buddha, whoch survived three earthquakes and got destroyed in the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923 - Art Museum, various monuments (including Saigō Takamori's, Prince Akihito Komatsu's) are located.

It's definitely a sad book, although I came prepared and was mostly invested in what author had to offer.
