Thank god I came back to this book. The first time I read it I just couldn't get more than 20 pages in. Not through any fault of this book but because I think I was a little burnt out on reading. But this time through it just pulled me in and never let go. When I read the final pages I shed a tear for all this fictional character had gone through. It’s hard not to see pieces of yourself in both Monique and Evelyn as you learn more about the intricacies of their lives. To see a woman be so unapologetic about her choices, her loves, and everything that made her who she is was refreshing. I inadvertently did a strong female lead one two punch by reading this right after reading Mexican Gothic, and I would have had it no other way.
