My Name Is Why by Lemn Sissay

3.0

WE READ BOOK CLUB - May 2020

This book brought a lot of insight into the care system and Lemn's experience in it. The Greenwood's were vile, the only saving grace was Norman the social worker.

The things that really hit me were:
-The book is to the Greenwood's, telling Lemn's side of the story, in an attempt for them to understand
-His description of depression
-Lemn discovering Bob Marley and figuring out his Black identity and the anxiety from the way people treat him because of that
-Lemn's interaction with Lenny Henry
-The description of the male staff at Woodend
-The description of him growing his locs
-The blog posts of the other boys at Woodend

I liked the book, although I'm not sure I'd read it again. I was disappointed that it stopped so abruptly and thought there'd be a summary of the rest of his life, but that may be another book. I'd give it 3.5 stars
