Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1850 by Susan Campbell Bartoletti

4.0

What a tragic (true!) story. The years of the Irish Potato Famine are presented by master storyteller Susan Campbell Bartoletti, including the economic and political structures that contributed to the famine, how it effected the Irish (especially the poor, but really everybody), and how it contributed to changes in Ireland.

The cover might not look like much, but I actually really appreciate the sickly yellow cover and the black and white archival illustrations throughout the book. This is a bleak story and the book's design reflects that.

I would hand this to anyone doing a report on the Famine and also young history buffs who like reading about tragic times.
