i think alice oseman wanted to write a story that was relatable for children or people who are getting comfortable with the idea of being queer. nick is coming to terms with his sexuality and what that looks like in conjuction with his current life. but also this story is about gay boys being happy. popular queer stories always have to have emotional turmoil to be interesting enough to publish or produce, but this has low stakes conflict and shows the pure joy of falling in love without consequences. the coming out to his mom scene made me sob because i wish my parents reacted the way his did. but also, it is so fucking cool that parents are capable of being understanding and just as loving when their kids come out. i feel overjoyed that kids can experience that, but also robbed of the pleasure. reading is magical.
