Jade War by Fonda Lee

dark emotional tense medium-paced

5.0

I am absolutely loving this series so far! The characters have thoroughly captured my heart. Although this second installment is much heavier on exposition and politics than its predecessor, I did not mind because it was all laid out in a very compelling and intelligent way. Fonda Lee is, without a doubt, a master of her craft. The plot line and the world is well thought out and crafted.

Jade City primarily focused on the internal clan conflicts within Kekon. However, this book added a whole new layer of depth by moving the focus towards foreign conflicts as well. It was so smart to include a perspective of Kekonese immigrant communities. By doing so, the author brought attention to many real issues faced by diaspora within our own society. (i.e lack of support, alienation, xenophobia, etc)

The characters and their relationships are so authentic and intricate. In this book, in particular, I found myself conflicted with many of Hilo’s actions but I also empathized with him and the love that he feels towards his family and clan. The characters are written in such a way where I feel like I can’t fully condemn anyone.

And that ending. 😩 That ending has me in shambles. I really need the Kaul family to get their well-deserved happy ending!!
