Tongues of Serpents by Naomi Novik

3.0

Somehow this one wasn't as good as I remember the previous books being.

Maybe I've just been reading too many "modern" novels, where the language is just like everyday. This one was harder to read, more like an Austen novel - with the somehow flowery language that says not very much using a lot of words.

There was a section around the middle that actually got disappointingly boring. Tracking smugglers over the red Australian desert? Yeah... riveting. Sorry, Naomi, you almost lost me there.

Luckily, there were dragons! Dragons make up for all manner of evils.

Oh, and Bunyips! If there can be dragons and sea serpents, why the hell not Bunyips?! That's awesome. There aren't enough fantasy novels based in Australia that include the legendary Bunyip.

So, this one gets 3 out of 5 from me. I had to read it, because it's part of the larger work of this series. But so far I think it's the weakest.
