I'm not sure where all these outstanding reviews come from. I won the book at a fundraiser so I read it. Fast read and I finished it to see if I could recommend it to my book club since I've wanted to interest them in a good mystery. This one seems to copy other authors writing about a PI who used to be a cop who has gotten in trouble with the law (or a rogue Detective) and operates by the seat of his pants, has a dog and few friends and gets by with very little sleep. It takes place in San Diego so I thought being familiar with the area would make it more interesting, but I didn't really get a sense of place. I had several "what?" moments while reading and figured it out fairly early on. There is also a second weak story. Lots of dead bodies and no happy ending. But from the reviews it seems like I am in the minority.
