The Fable of Us by Nicole Williams

4.0

Family (sigh) sometimes they just don't get you and they screw things up when they think they are helping. And sisters- nobody can be quite as ruthlessly spiteful.
Clara grew up wealthy and hated it. Her family does not understand her and they don't try. She left 7 years ago after a tragedy and hasn't been back. Now her younger sister is marrying her ex boyfriend and she is expected at the wedding. Not to mention the possibility that she will run into the love of her life that had left her all those years ago.
Boone is from the wrong side of the tracks. He has a mother who is the town drunk and a sister whose life has taken a turn that he cannot handle. Clara was the light in his life but their relationship was doomed from the start. Even though he left her 7 years ago, he is still shattered. He still struggles with being seen as town trash and fights it constantly.
After running into Boone the moment she arrives in town, Clara offers him money to be her plus one at the wedding. Boone and Clara are at war without the truth as an ally for either one. Add in her hateful family, the horrible ex, and all the things they don't know and you know there will be an explosion.
I loved the determination of these two to not conform to others' expectations.
At the heart of it, this book is a second chance story. It's about how lack of communication can utterly destroy a relationship.
