It's Only A Little Death by Shane Blackheart

4.0

Finished it in the morning half awake lol but it was a story that was out of my comfort zone, still I wanted to try, and ended up really enjoying it. Even though I found mystery surrounded Silver's death a bit predictable once the memories started floating in, I don't think it was the main point to make it a mystery, and more so let the story be a natural exploration of one's trauma and response to it.

Copy of the authors note:
This story contains some sensitive subject matter, including drug addiction, violence, police brutality, and transphobia/homophobia. There are also several sexually explicit scenes, many with monsters.

At the start, it took a bit for me to get into it. I enjoyed the descriptions the first few chapters had, and I wished the rest of the chapters had that a bit more (like describing the environment more beyond a few key words, and use other descriptions than eyes, like the sounds and smells etc).

It was out of my comfort zone because of the explicit scenes with monsters (dipping my toes slowly into the genre, or as this book called itself an erotic horror novel, which is fitting) but I found them to be written well and not reptive, as well as adding something to the plot. Silver's relationship with everyone in the story, main and side characters, was also clear and written with a purpose, which I can appreciate. Overall, I had a fun time with the story despite it being out of my comfort zone and for it dealing with serious and sensitive subjects.
