No Gods, No Monsters by Cadwell Turnbull

4.0

What a book! I love the world this author has built. It's deeply considered and so much has been constructed and carefully linked. However, the way the story was told with flash forwards and backs and shifting narrators was a bit confusing. By the end it all tied together and I felt like we had reached a certain crescendo, but I almost needed like a big board with red string to keep everything straight.

In the best ways, this book reminded me of Station Eleven and Annihilation, both books I really enjoyed. Like I said, I'm absolutely stoked on this world building. The narrative structure is just a bit confusing, and we only got glimpses of the overarching links in this novel. I would love to see this translated to a TV show or mini series, I think it would be incredible.

I also loved what this book had to say. The past few years have shown that the American people are a lot of talk--"well if fascism was on the rise, I'd fight it!" "Well if there was a global pandemic, I'd do everything I could to end it!" "If monsters were real, I would totally-"

Would you though? This book makes the point that, no, you probably wouldn't. You would say they're probably fake, it's a hoax or a prank, and people who believe it are crazy.
