Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare
5.0
this. was. incredible.
every time i read a shakespeare play for the first time i fall in love with it. some of the language and images in this play blow my mind.
and we need to discuss the violence. it is BRUTAL. especially lavinia. i was on the verge of tears as she was dragged, pleading, from the stage. and that final scene ... one after the other. constant death.
very interesting that titus feels like he needs to kill lavinia because she has been 'ravished'. everyone thinks about how her trauma is affecting them, rather than the way it has utterly ruined her life. ugh
i watched the 2017 RSC production which was brilliant. the modern dress emphasised the fact that this could be any civilisation in decline. the blood was plentiful.
