Black Feathers by Joseph D'Lacey

4.0

Black Feathers is… well, it’s a post-apocalyptic fantasy of the most fascinating kind with a side-order of corvids. I love corvids, fantasy, post-apocalypse fiction, and a hint of shamanism. This book was basically pretty much calculated to whoosh to the top of my recent favourites list.

It’s engaging, the dual narrative/timeframe conceit is intriguing and well-executed, and as a fantasy themed post-apocalypse it quite frankly rocks. Crow mythology is used lightly but extremely well, and the apocalypse is clearly related to our abuse of the planet.

Black Feathers is the first in a series, and I think you can tell that while the book closes off its own story fairly well, it’s a beginning, an opening of a saga. There are questions left unanswered and threads yet to be knitted. I will definitely be investigating other books when they’re published.
