Hannah Lowe’s first book of poetry (but the second book by her I’ve read) is wonderful: she writes in free verse but also experiments with the sonnet form quite successfully. The poems about her father, a Jamaican-Chinese immigrant to Britain, are honest and convey accurately the mixed emotions and ambiguity we often feel toward our parents. There is some humor scattered between the covers but overall the poems are serious without being somber. Another perfect set of poems from Bloodaxe Books…
