After a disappointing experience with another Nora Roberts book, I approached "Undercurrents" with caution and no expectations. Little did I know that the first part of the book would hit me like a ton of bricks. The vivid portrayal of domestic and child abuse left me emotionally raw - angry, tearful, and at times, ready to abandon the book altogether. The end of Part 1 brought some relief, but I was unsure whether to continue.

Despite its flaws - rushed storylines, forced plot points, and unnecessary drama - "Undercurrents" managed to captivate me. It's not a perfect book by any means, but what it lacks in polished storytelling, it makes up for with its characters. Two days after finishing, I find myself still thinking about Zane, Emily, Lee, Britt, and Darby. Their stories have lingered with me in a way I didn't expect.

While "Undercurrents" may not be Roberts' finest work, the characters' journeys and relationships elevate it beyond its shortcomings. It's a testament to Roberts' ability to create compelling individuals that, despite the book's issues, I'm rating it highly. If you can get past the intense opening and some narrative hiccups, you might find yourself as invested in these characters as I was.
