Bird Box throws you into a terrifying post-apocalyptic world where survival depends on one rule: don't open your eyes. The story follows Malorie, who has to survive in a world where mysterious creatures drive anyone who glimpses them to violent madness, resulting in murder or suicide. This book is part thriller, part horror, and it’ll immerse you within its suspenseful atmosphere. The plot alone is unsettling, and Malerman's writing will amplify the terror.
Josh Malerman's world-building is incredible. I was really pulled into Malorie’s journey, whether she's navigating a dangerous river or hiding inside a house, relying on sound and touch to figure out what's happening around her. Every situation is described vividly that I can feel the eerieness and tension coming off the pages. Malerman masterfully captured the fear of the unknown by making the characters blindfolded for most of the story. I was put right there with them, guessing every sound and movement and feeling incoming danger.
One of the best parts of Bird Box is the ending. The ending doesn't give away what the creatures are, where they came from, or why they cause such horror. We are left with unanswered questions and a fear of what we can not see or understand, making it even more creepy and haunting.
Overall, Bird Box is a gripping and atmospheric read that will keep you on edge long after you’ve finished. If you're into psychological thriller/horror and post-apocalyptic fiction, Bird Box is definitely worth the read! It will transport you on an intense and unique journey through fear and survival.
