Musical Tables: Poems by Billy Collins

3.0

A better title for this book might have been "Brevity". This recent collection by Billy Collins consists entirely of very short poems written during the pandemic. They cover a range of subjects, seemingly whatever might have popped into Billy's mind that day. You will recognize his signature wit even in the condensed form.

I enjoy a short poem, but they may be more satiating as bites found sprinkled between their more substantial counterparts. The lack of variety in length in this particular collection left me a bit unsatisfied.

While you will find some gems here (my favorites were "Last to Leave the Party", "Nurse", "Morning Walk", "The Student", "Fay", "Bad Hotel", and "Halloween") this isn't Billy's best.
