All-Star Batman, Volume 1: My Own Worst Enemy by Steve Wands, Dean White, Scott Snyder, Declan Shalvey, Jordie Bellaire, John Romita Jr., Danny Miki

4.0

John Romita Jr's art was one of the reasons that I picked up this book and it didn't disappoint. I think he does a great job of adding a bit of bulk to Batman's costume as a piece of protective equipment and hiding place for all of those great bat gadgets as well as being believably agile. This story was full of bat-villains and Batman battles through them but, surprisingly for a Scott Snyder story, his drive forward in spite of the odds felt a little too relentless for Batman, without his usual out-thinking the bad guys, and Romita Jr's art worked well with the action. The backup story was not as fun, with Batman beginning the training of a new ally (not sidekick) in Lark, but its introduction of "The Cursed Wheel" of bat-training may be interesting down the road. Collecting: All-Star Batman, Volume 1: My Own Worst Enemy 1-5. I'd rate this book 3.5 stars if Goodreads allowed half stars.
