The Disasters by M.K. England

1.0

DNF'd at 40% or so which was at the point where I realized this book is literally antithetical to A Half-Built Garden's engagement with the violence of colonization and the inherent gaze of colonizers as Infantilization/Barbarization of the Other which was when
Spoiler it was revealed that one of the kids is a Kazakh trans girl and apparently in the future Kazakhstan is just a Backwards Country, Actually. DNF'd at the point where it was revealed that the villains in the narrative were "Terrorists" who were eco-justice activists, teachers, and scientists who DIDN'T want to engage with overtly stated colonization and instead wanted to improve conditions on earth. DNF'd when all 5 brown and black kids reacted with confusion at the idea that anyone wouldn't want to engage in overtly stated colonization. DNF'd when it was revealed a corrupt brown politician was funding the "Terrorists."
Excruciating uncritical engagement with the idea of diversity at the expense of the characters themselves and their inherent histories as black and brown people. what the fuck.
