The Spider & the Storm by Kelsey Kingsley

5.0

I know right off the bat that whatever I write is not going to convey all the things that I loved about this book. Just when I think there is no way the author can top the book that came before, she blows me away with the next one.

Charlie Corbin has always been considered eccentric, except the kids called him far worse names. He had premonitions of events to come that affected him bodily. So from a very young age, it became his family's mission to protect Charlie at all costs. His mom and dad, his brother Luke, and later his brother's girlfriend Melanie. Tragedy seems to follow the Corbins. From their parents' fatal crash, Luke's incarceration, Charlie's tormentors. Charlie can't seem to catch a break and each time he feels like it's his fault. That's a lot to carry. Until he meets Stormy. He wasn't looking for her, but somehow she found him. She was the first person outside of his family to see him, to understand him, to love him unconditionally. She's connected to Rain and Soldier (Saving Rain), her sister and brother-in-law. And just when I think things are looking up for Charlie, more emotional damage comes barreling in. But with rain and storms come sunlight and while it's not quite the ending Charlie (and I) might have wanted for Luke and Melanie, Charlie and Stormy get the HEA they deserve.

I'm still asking myself how the author does it. How does she throw these curve balls that make things seem to be the in the deepest crevasse? How does she continue to rip my heart to shreds and then piece it back together bit by bit? That's talent, my friends. Having followed this author from almost the very beginning of her writing career, I can wholeheartedly say that she just gets better and better. Her characters aren't pretty or neatly put together. They're messy and relatable and realistic.

I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.
