Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0: Origins by Randolph Lalonde
4.0
This is a free Kindle book from Amazon that is obviously a setup to purchase additional books in the series. It's a grouping of three novellas that set the stage for a ongoing space opera saga.
The first of the novellas sets the stage - providing the backstory and setup for the remainder of the series, in that vein, Lalonde creates a compelling universe and intriguing environment for the crew to operate in. Through that process, he fills the narrative with a strong plot full of action along with some twists.
The second novella starts the "real" action with the introduction of the powerful, "evil" corporations. The story is another great read - with constant action and fun interplay between the characters.
Lalonde talks a bit about the technologies in use, but this is definitely not "hard science-fiction." Nonetheless, it continues to be a fun read.
The third book continues the fun and excitement...not much more to say that hasn't already been said. I'll definitely dig out the follow up books.
