I've heard a lot of good things about this book and the series in general, but it wasn' t what I expected. It was in some respect with the doorways and each child entering a fantastical world that they came to adore and when they were brought back, they were unhappy and desperately wanted to go back.

There was LGBTQIA + rep (specifically Aromatntic) in this book which is very present in the story. I enjoyed how we are lead to challenge our perspective of normal and not force people especially children into a box that we/society have created for them. That what people call 'fantasies' or a 'figment of your imagination' could actually be real.

What i wasn't expecting was the book to be a bit morbid and well... Not to spoil too much but there was a focus on death. Not that I was expecting happiness and rainbows either. Overall, the author conjured up some fascinating doorways and each character had their own distinct voice and personality that carried throughout the book. So it was a very enjoyable read, but if you're looking for something light-hearted... This particular one isn't that.
