Paris for One and Other Stories by Jojo Moyes

3.0

The first “book” was awesome. I adored it. The characters were likable and fun and dynamic, and their relationships with each other were realistic and colorful.
It was downhill from there.
The rest of the stories were awkward and disjointed after that glowing centerpiece. Why not just leave the first story as a book of its own? Why burden it with other stories which are not particularly connected to the first other than in occasional geographical features?
I think my note on page 193 pretty much sums up how I feel about this book: “I only JUST got acquainted with these characters and now you’re ripping them away again???”
I wanted to get to know the characters like I had in the first story!! But I didn’t get a chance to! And this the other stories feel flat on the pavement because I am too far from the target demographic to relate to the protagonists in the short-lived stories.
But I finished. I found that I had to break up this book with *other* books because I couldn’t handle the abrupt skip from one unsatisfied-wife story to the next. It was so JARRING.
The three star review would be one/two stars if I didn’t like the first story so much. The first story gets five stars. The remaining stories get much lower ratings. So I compromised in my overall review.
Not my cup of tea.
